What is The Cochrane Library?

The Cochrane Library consists of seven databases which are listed below.   All seven are available via subscription:  on CD-Rom or via the World Wide Web (WWW).  Three of the databases (CDSR, DARE and CENTRAL) are also available through Ovid Technologies Evidence-based Medicine Reviews database.  DARE, NHS EED and the HTA Database are freely available through the WWW.  The contents of the databases are:

C         The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) features the full text of regularly updated systematic reviews, maintained by the various Cochrane Collaborative Review Groups.

C         The Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE) contains structured abstracts of systematic reviews, and is maintained by the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York.

C         The Cochran Central Register of Controlled Trials  (CENTAL) is a bibliographic database (i.e. citation and abstract only) of controlled trials identified by the U.S. Cochrane Center and Cochrane Collaborative Review Groups.

C         The Cochrane Database of Methodology Reviews (CDMR) contains the full text of systematic reviews of methodological studies undertaken by members of the Cochrane Collaboration.

C         The Cochrane Review Methodology Register (CMR) is a bibliographic database of articles and books on methods used in controlled trials and in preparing reviews.

C         The Health Technology Assessment Database (HTA) contains published and in progress health technology assessment reports.  It is maintained by the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York.

C         NHS Economic Evaluation Database (NHS EED) contains structured abstracts of economic evaluations of health care interventions.  It is maintained by the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York.

Cochrane Access via their Web Page and/or CD-Rom

This distributor for the Cochrane Library in North America is John Wiley & Sons, Inc. (http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/home).  They update the Cochrane Library on a quarterly basis, and offer subscriptions to individuals for $265 per year.  The user can select either World Wide Web access, or a cd-rom subscription Center.

Accessing Cochrane via Ovid

Ovid Technologies, as part of their database, Evidence-based Medicine Reviews, has mounted the The Cochrane Library of Systematic Reviews (CLSR), DARE and CENTRAL.  Like the Wiley product, these databases are updated quarterly.  One major advantage of Ovid’s EBM-R is that you can access it via a Medline search.  Searches in Medline that relate to a particular Cochrane Systematic Review or DARE record will display a link to a Topic Review.  This link will provide you with the full text of a Cochrane Systematic Review or full structured DARE abstract.  Ovid, however, does not market their databases to individual subscribers, only to libraries and other large institutions.

Accessing DARE, HTA and NHS EED via the World Wide Web

All three databases maintained by the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination can be accessed via the Centre’s website at: http://www.york.ac.uk/inst/crd/crddatabases.htm

What is the Difference in the Databases?

There is no real difference between the contents of the The Cochrane Library of Systematic Reviews on either Wiley or  Ovid, although  Wiley does currently offer Cochrane Systematic Reviews in PDF format and some additional resources for Cochrane authors. The main difference in the two sources is their access to databases.  Wiley offers access to four (CRMD, CMR, HTA and NHS EED) databases which Ovid does not. Ovid, however, provides access to Medline, as well as to contents of ACP Journal Club in full text.
